Our wood

The factories that make HAUFEN® wooden windows plant and harvest forests exclusively for our own timber needs, mainly in Asia and, for some wood types, in Europe.

Our timber comes from vast areas of controlled ecological planting (sustainable forest management) and legal harvesting. This guarantees a stable quality of raw material straight from the source, without resellers and wholesalers who add cost and compromise the quality of the wood.

HAUFEN® has secured, and offers its customers, the finest wood species in excellent quality.

Meranti plantation in Malaysia

From forest to window

  1. Harvesting

After felling, the timber is taken to timber processing plants in Germany or other European countries.

  2. Natural drying

The timber is cut into the sections needed to make the windows, then left outdoors for a long time to dry naturally.

  3. Kiln drying

Next it goes into special drying kilns, where it is brought to the ideal moisture level, usually 9–11%.

  4. 3-ply laminated timber

After sorting and special processing, the 3-ply anti-warp laminated timber is produced: the main raw material of HAUFEN® windows.

Dark Malaysian Meranti

Density 450–500 kg/m³HAUFEN®’s choice

Meranti is a tropical wood that grows in Asia, mainly in Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. Like all woods it comes in different grades. The top grade is Dark Meranti, used by all the major plants that produce 3-ply laminated timber for wooden windows.

Despite the wide variety of woods, Dark Malaysian Meranti accounts for 99.6% of preferences across Europe. In Mediterranean countries especially, it is considered the most suitable wood for exterior windows: high bending and compressive strength, increased hardness and durability, insulating properties, very good elasticity and minimal dimensional change during processing. The 3-ply laminating method ensures zero tendency to warp.

It also offers a very good price / performance ratio, a long life and resistance to high humidity and extreme temperature changes such as those we have in Greece.

HAUFEN® uses only premium, high-density Dark Meranti and recommends it as the best choice for exterior windows in Mediterranean climates like Greece: the ideal “best value for money” solution for the buyer.

European OakEuropean Oak
European Oak

European Oak

Density 670–720 kg/m³

European Oak is a heavy, hard wood, brown-yellow-grey in colour with a wide grain. It grows in Europe and Asia, dries very slowly, changes little in dimension, and has very good strength and machining properties.

HAUFEN® uses top-grade 3-ply laminated oak. Gluing it needs particular care, while it takes paint and finishes very well.

It is not recommended for the Greek climate, and especially not for the Greek islands.

European SpruceEuropean Spruce

European Spruce

Density 380–450 kg/m³

Spruce, like Larch, is a European conifer that grows in the forests of Europe. It is used in 3-ply laminated form, has good strength, is lighter than Meranti and has a uniform look; the grades we use are knot-free.

It absorbs moisture and dries relatively slowly, is affected by changes in humidity and temperature, and processes, paints and finishes well.

Not recommended for lacquer colours (water-based RAL lacquers).
