Does wood provide fire protection?
In order for wood to ignite without flame presence it has to reach temperatures of 450 °C to 500 °C with a charging rate of 0.67mm / minute. This means that the wood burns at a very slow rate. The most important feature of wood in the field of fire protection is that when the outer part of the cross-section is burned, its interior does not lose its mechanical strength. Wood was a lower heat capacity than concrete and steel. In winter, wood “traps” the heat in the room and allows for heating it up faster, while in the summer it works inversely, thus it dissipates the heat from the environment resulting in keeping the house cool, ensuring up to 30% savings in heating and cooling. Studies have shown that wood is 9 times more insulating than concrete and 430 times than steel.
Does wood provide thermal insulation?
The superiority of wood over other window materials is particularly noticeable in thermal insulation. The thermal insulation offered by the wood is such that it allows us to safely grasp a flaming piece from its non-flaming edge. Compared to other materials, wood has 4,000 times better thermal capacity than steel and 1,800 times better than aluminium.
Why should I choose wooden windows?
No building material can be compared to the warmth and harmony that wood offers, whether it is used as a frame or as a building material on roofs and floors. Wood is always a living material that lives in our space.
Wood is the most natural material and it is mostly preferred in homes. Its appearance creates a sense of intimacy and warmth. Technically, it has many advantages such as its easy processing and its good thermal insulation and sound-proofing ability.
From shipbuilding to construction, it has been proven that wood has excellent durability.
In contrast to other window frames, wooden windows can always stay fresh after simple maintenance. The significant difference with the frames of other materials is that the latter are repaired with great difficulty or not at all, while their material can undergo significant and irreversible, molecular alterations.
Can I repair minor damage on my wooden windows?
One of the biggest advantages of wooden windows is the ability to repair hits and scratches that have been created after the installation of the windows and before the house is inhabited, but also any other time. These damages are not important. Along with each order you receive from HAUFEN® a colour package, all necessary materials and a comprehensive maintenance manual. The process of repairing paint damage is very simple. Apply a paint to the surface of the wood with a brush and in a few minutes it heals and restores the colour of the damaged area to its original condition.
This ability makes wood unique among all the other materials used for window frames.
Can I change the colour of my windows?
Changing the colour in a HAUFEN® wooden window is feasible and absolutely safe for the quality of the frames. This change can be made at any time. Simply select the tint, obtain the appropriate water-soluble dye exclusively from HAUFEN® and follow the instructions of our technicians. The process involves cleaning the frame, a simple sanding (not rubbing) of the surface and applying the new colour. The original paint will give its place to the new dye, which will have the same properties as the original applied by the factory.
Which is the right way to clean my windows?
Cleaning of the wooden windows is not a unique process beyond the usual method. All mild detergents can be used. Wash with plenty of water at a period of time where the sun is not vertically over your house. HAUFEN® provides its customers with the “HAUFEN® Kitbox” maintenance kit, which includes all the necessary materials and detailed instructions.
Do wooden windows need maintenance?
During the last 20 years, our windows have been installed on islands, in houses by the sea, in mountains, in houses that are hit in the most difficult and adverse weather conditions, yet the painting of our windows responds and justifies our reputation.
This success is not accidental.
Our dyes are water soluble from Sigma. The process of painting the frames begins by injecting and removing all the fungi from the wood. There is a total saturation of the frame in varnish tanks.
Multiple coatings of ecological paints are sprayed onto the surface of the wood. The above work shields the surface of the wood. Painting ends in 19 business days. It is time consuming but its the most effective and durable procedure.
We consider it important to take care of the exterior surfaces of the frames with a period of care appropriate to the weather conditions prevailing in your area. In this way your windows will radiate the original beauty of the wood forever.
A cleaning and care kit comes with every order. Modern wooden windows do not require old style maintenance (scratching and painting), instead they only demand a good wash with plenty of water (never under direct sunlight) and, depending on the weather in the area, you can also use water-based cleaning materials that can be applied with a cotton cloth sponge.
Are wooden windows ecological?
A recent WWF report states that the expected life of a 1.5 m2 wooden window is 60 years, while the life of a similar PVC window is just 20 years.
Wood is the most important renewable raw material used as building material. It requires relatively little processing before it is used, so the production process is relatively clean and requires little energy. However, the choice of wood as a building material should also take into account certain other parameters that are crucial in order to characterise the wood as a truly “green” material.
HAUFEN adheres to the strictest ecological standards. From tree felling and logging up to processing, construction of the frames and their placement at home. Materials, paints, processing methods, everything is subject to rigorous controls to protect workers and end-users. All certificates are available to all interested parties.
